Richard Garland is a former gang member from Philadelphia. Because of lifestyle choices, he spent 23 1/2 years of his life in the criminal justice system. All of his friends are dead, except one, who has been incarcerated for 38 years. He began his education by earning his GED while incarcerated in 1987. In 1996, he attained his Master's Degree in Social Work. In January 2004, he became the Director of the Violence Prevention Program for Allegheny County. In that position, he developed the “One Vision One Life” Project. One Vision One Life is based on the concept that the decisions we as a community make really can affect who will or will not get shot tomorrow night or next week.
