In addition to his duties as Transportation Director for the Carlisle Area School District, Mike Hurley also serves as the district’s Director of Safety & Security. He has been actively involved in Emergency Management planning and services for the past 28 years, serving as President and Chief of Operations for Silver Spring Ambulance and Rescue Association from 1975 to 1982. During the Three Mile Island Incident in 1979, he served as the Medical Evacuation Officer for Cumberland County, with logistical responsibility for evacuating hospitals and nursing homes. He is recognized locally for his efforts to expand school safety and security, and statewide for his involvement in staging mock school bus accident drills and developing emergency response plans for school bus accidents. He currently serves as School Services Officer for the Cumberland County Office of Emergency Preparedness and is a member of the Mass Casualty Incident Response Team and the Special Hazards Operations Team. He is the Co-Founder and current President of the Cumberland County Safe Schools Association, an organization which has brought together representatives from all nine school districts, law enforcement, fire and emergency medical personnel for the purpose of discussing and planning responses to school incidents. He has also served as president of the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials and chairs the School Safety Committee for that organization. He previously chaired the PASBO Transportation Committee for five years and was instrumental in establishing PASBO’s “Comprehensive Guide for School Transportation.” He has been certified as an EMT/Paramedic and holds certification as a Hazardous Materials Technician.
